Weather stations: Choosing the right housing design

The four housing designs of Elsner weather stations explained in a nutshell

Weather stations play a central role in building automation: they record wind, rain, brightness and other climatic influences so that shading, ventilation and protective functions work reliably. Many models from Elsner Elektronik offer very similar sensor technology. In addition to the question ‘What does the weather station measure, calculate and control?’, the question ‘Which housing type is suitable for my area of application?’ also arises.

This page gives you a clear overview of the four housing types – with their strengths, typical areas of application and the technical features that make a difference in practice.

Ultrasound & wind direction

Suntracer pro: Complete solution for large, complex buildings

Suntracer pro is the most technically advanced weather station in the range. Its distinctive ring shape contains the sensors for wind measurement; while the ultrasonic measurement itself is performed across the measurement distances, enabling wind speed and direction to be recorded without moving parts – precise, maintenance-free and ideal for applications where wind direction plays a significant role, such as wind-sensitive blinds or facades with multiple orientations.

Thanks to its roof mounting, the sensor is exposed to the wind and delivers extremely reliable measurements. In addition to wind measurement, Suntracer pro records brightness, precipitation, temperature, humidity and air pressure. GPS enables sun position calculation and exact time synchronisation. For medium and large projects, this design is practically the reference solution when it comes to accuracy, functionality and robustness.

Suntracer pro is available for KNX and RS485.

P03: Robust housing for long-term reliability

The P03 housing design has been developed for demanding environments. It offers a spacious, robust housing with a particularly solid construction. This makes the P03 suitable for installation locations where mechanical stress, severe weather conditions or increased contamination may occur.

The sensor technology is functionally equivalent to the sl/P04 series, but is housed in a more robust enclosure that is ideal for industrial properties, commercial buildings or free-standing installations. P03 can be mounted on the façade or on the roof and impresses with its reliability and stability in continuous use.

Depending on the model, P03 weather stations are available for Modbus and RS485.

sl/P04: A discreet solution for modern façades

The sl/P04 housing design is ideal for projects where the technology should be visually unobtrusive. The slim housing blends harmoniously into modern façades and ensures that the architecture remains in the foreground.

Despite its compact shape, the sensor technology is complete: wind speed is measured electrically and therefore wear-free, while brightness and rain are reliably recorded. sl/P04 is particularly well suited to residential buildings, sensitive façade areas or anywhere where a clear design is deliberately sought.

The sl and P04 weather stations are available for KNXand RS485, depending on the model.

Windancer: Compact solution for price-sensitive projects

Windancer KNX(-GPS) is the ideal choice for projects that require solid basic functionality and where budget is a factor. The mechanical cup anemometer reliably measures wind speed, but unlike electrical or ultrasonic methods, it is not wear-free.

This is perfectly adequate for many applications: in single-family homes, conservatories or smaller automation solutions, the Windancer provides reliable values for shading and protection functions. It also measures brightness and rain; models with GPS offer additional sun position calculation. The compact design is suitable for both wall and roof mounting and is a simple, economical solution for standard requirements.

Windancer is available exclusively for the KNX system.

What all designs have in common

Regardless of their housing, all weather stations serve the same purpose: they provide the relevant environmental data for safe and convenient building automation. This includes precise brightness measurements for shading, rapid rain detection for awning and window control and, depending on the model, GPS for calculating the position of the sun and time synchronisation.

The main differences lie primarily in the type of wind measurement: mechanical in the Windancer KNX(-GPS), electrical and therefore wear-free in the sl/P04 and P03, or via ultrasound including wind direction in the Suntracer pro.

Conclusion

The housing shape determines the application frame

The four housing types differ primarily in terms of where they can be mounted and what they are designed for. sl/P04 is the right choice if you want the weather station to be visually unobtrusive on the façade. P03 is suitable if a particularly robust housing is required. Suntracer pro is designed for roof mounting and projects involving wind direction. Windancer KNX(-GPS) is useful if simple mechanical wind measurement is sufficient. Once you know where the weather station can be located and what measurement accuracy your project requires, you can quickly find the right housing type.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about choosing the right weather station

Do I need wind direction detection for every project?

No. Wind direction is only relevant if façades and slats are to react depending on the direction of the wind. For classic shading or protective functions, wind speed is sufficient.

Which housing design is the most durable?

Housing designs without mechanical parts – i.e. sl/P04, P03 and Suntracer pro – generally require less maintenance, as there are no moving components that can wear out.

Does the size of the building really matter when it comes to the housing shape?

Yes. For many façades or large differences in height, sensor concepts such as the ultrasonic ring of the Suntracer KNX pro provide more consistent and precise values.

Can I switch from one housing shape to another at a later date?

Technically yes, provided that the installation location and cabling are compatible. In practice, however, it is advisable to determine which requirements must be met (e.g. wind direction, design, budget) during the planning stage.

Are there any dependencies between KNX functions and the housing shape?

The KNX functions themselves hardly differ. The decisive differences lie in the measurement method, the precision and the typical area of application of the housing shapes.
