Plan, automate, optimise: Shading with KNX

News of 24 July 2025

Smart Shading Concepts for Modern Buildings

Shading with KNX is about more than just raising and lowering blinds automatically. Intelligent systems control shading based on weather data – such as brightness, sun position, wind or temperature. This helps prevent overheating in summer and makes optimal use of solar heat gains in winter.

At the same time, smart shading helps reduce energy consumption: By limiting the need for active cooling and heating, it supports a more efficient indoor climate control. This not only enhances comfort, but also contributes to sustainable building operation – whether in residential or commercial settings.

To implement this effectively, sensors, control systems and actuators must work in perfect harmony. That’s exactly where Elsner Elektronik comes in: Our KNX weather stations, blind actuators and system components provide the right technology for customised shading solutions – whether in residential or commercial buildings.

Elsner components for smart shading with KNX

Efficient shading within a KNX system requires a well-coordinated interaction between sensors, control logic and actuators. Depending on the scope and requirements of the project, this can result in a wide range of automation scenarios – from wind-based retraction of individual awnings to coordinated slat tracking across multiple façades.

Elsner Elektronik provides perfectly matched system components for this purpose: weather stations with precise real-time data acquisition, blind actuators with integrated logic, and extension modules for large-scale or specialised installations. This allows shading solutions to be reliably planned and flexibly scaled – in residential as well as commercial buildings.

The following overview shows the role each of these components plays within the system.

Core components

KNX Weather Stations

KNX weather stations such as the Windancer KNX-GPS are the core element of any automated shading system. Windancer measures wind, temperature, precipitation and brightness, and calculates the sun’s position – for precise and comfortable shading control.

KNX Blind Actuators

KNX blind actuators allow flexible and automated control of venetian blinds, awnings or roller shutters. The KNX S4-B10 230 V, with integrated façade logic, controls up to four drives and enables precise shading and ventilation scenarios – including slat angle tracking, scene control and priority logic.

Extension

For More Complex Requirements

The BX8 KNX blind control extension allows you to control up to eight additional façades – including slat adjustment, wind direction detection and time-based control. Ideal for complex applications or larger-scale projects.
