Water your garden smartly with Jardana

Automatic irrigation for healthy plants – with and without KNX

In building automation, efficiency and the targeted use of resources play a central role – from heating control to shading systems. Irrigation of outdoor areas, however, is often overlooked and implemented as a standalone solution. Yet this is precisely where there is real potential: by integrating irrigation into the overall building automation system, watering can be controlled based on actual needs, existing sensors can be utilised, and water consumption can be reduced in a more deliberate way.

This is where Jardana comes in, extending building automation with an integrated irrigation solution. When connected to a KNX system, irrigation is no longer treated as an isolated function but becomes part of the overall project logic. Different outdoor areas can be managed individually and seamlessly integrated into existing control and regulation concepts.

At the same time, existing sensors can be used across systems: weather data, soil moisture and other conditions are incorporated into irrigation decisions, rather than operating independently of one another.

As a result, irrigation is not only automated but aligned with the same logic as other building systems – with the aim of using resources more efficiently and optimising the system as a whole.

This turns irrigation into a fully integrated part of the overall concept, delivering clear benefits in terms of efficiency and resource management.

Operating principle

How does Jardana work?

Jardana controls irrigation via a central unit with four integrated valves. Each valve supplies a separate irrigation zone, allowing different garden areas – such as lawns, flower beds or planting zones – to be managed independently. Individual watering times and durations can be defined for each zone, with irrigation operating within set time windows.

In addition, irrigation can be controlled based on actual demand using soil moisture sensors. These sensors continuously monitor the moisture level in the soil. If it falls below a defined threshold, irrigation starts automatically. Once sufficient moisture is reached, it stops again. This combination of scheduled control and sensor-based input ensures that irrigation is both predictable and demand-driven.

When connected to a KNX system, control can be extended even further. External sensors and system data – for example from KNX weather stations or rain and wind sensors – can be integrated into the logic. Within KNX projects, multiple influencing factors can be linked together. Irrigation, for instance, can be enabled only when the soil is dry, no rain is detected, and additional conditions are met.

This creates a multi-layered control logic in which irrigation does not operate in isolation but is fully integrated into the overall system.

For which types of irrigation is Jardana suitable?

Jardana is suitable for a wide range of irrigation methods – from drip irrigation in flower beds to sprinklers for larger lawn areas.

The four integrated valves allow the system to be divided into multiple irrigation zones. This means lawns, beds or individual planting areas can be supplied in a targeted way.

Each zone can be configured with its own watering times and durations, enabling irrigation to be tailored to different plants, soil types and locations.

Additional time windows and irrigation-free days support better water absorption and promote healthy root growth.

When combined with KNX sensors, irrigation can also adapt automatically to actual conditions, ensuring water is only used when needed.

What are the advantages of additional earth sensors?

Soil moisture sensors enable even more optimal adaptation of irrigation to the needs of the plants. At the same time, they save water because the watering timer only starts when the soil is dry and ends as soon as the soil is sufficiently moist. This fulfils another important requirement: Sensitivity to precious water resources.

Typically, a sensor is buried in each irrigation zone in the root zone of the plants. The sensor line is connected to the irrigation controller. Observation and trial and error are the best practices to determine the optimal settings for "Dry - water in the next time window" and "Moist enough - stop or pause watering immediately". The duration and degree of soil drying as well as the frequency and amount of watering depend on the planting, soil conditions and location.

How do I integrate Jardana into a KNX Smart Home?

Jardana can be connected to your existing KNX system in just a few steps.
Caution: electrical voltage. Connection to KNX must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

The KNX bus cable is connected within the electronics unit. Jardana can then be integrated into the system like any other KNX device and commissioned via ETS. Programming mode can be activated either directly on the device or via the app.

KNX and the app can be used in parallel: while the app allows for straightforward parameterisation, KNX integrates Jardana into the overall building automation system. In practice, this means irrigation can be centrally controlled, monitored and manually adjusted if required – for example via push buttons, visualisation interfaces or logic modules within the system. Status messages can also be displayed, and lock functions can be implemented, for instance during garden use or under specific operating conditions.

Sensors and system data from the KNX system can be used directly, without the need for separate control units.

Further details on the technical integration of Jardana into a KNX system can be found in the Jardana manual.
