Briefly explained

What exactly is DALI?

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a globally standardised communication protocol that is defined in the IEC 62386 standard. It was specially developed for the control of lighting systems and enables digital communication between luminaires, control devices and other components in a lighting network.

In a DALI network, each luminaire is given its own address, allowing it to be controlled and monitored individually. This allows you to control the light intensity, colour temperature and other parameters quickly and easily.

Summarised

What advantages does DALI offer in general?

DALI plays a central role in building automation, as it enables the seamless integration of lighting systems into modern building management systems. DALI offers a number of advantages:

  • Individual lighting control: each luminaire or group of luminaires can be controlled independently. This allows you to flexibly adapt your lighting to different room uses and times of day.
  • Energy efficiency: By dimming or switching off your lighting as required with the help of DALI, you can optimise your energy consumption. To do this, you can link your DALI system with sensors, for example, to react to presence or daylight and adjust the lighting accordingly.
  • Monitoring and diagnostics: With DALI, you can monitor lighting systems remotely. Defective luminaires or operating states can be detected and reported automatically, making maintenance easier and minimising downtime.
  • Integration with other systems: DALI can be easily integrated into larger building automation systems, such as KNX, which also control heating, ventilation, security and other aspects of building operation.

Range of functions

What can the KNX DALI Gateways do?

The Elsner KNX DALI Gateways offer a wide range of functions with which you can organise your lighting control efficiently and flexibly:

  • Control of up to 64 DALI devices per system: (Model L1: 1 DALI system connection, L2: 2 connections) Centralised, group and individual device addressing
  • Support for DALI DT8: Control of brightness, Tunable White (colour temperature), RGB, RGBW, HSV and HSVW (colour)
  • Extended scene control: Integration of up to 16 scenes per DALI system to define brightness, colour temperature and colour
  • Light changes over the course of the day: Human Centric Lighting adapts the light colour temperature to natural sunlight during the course of the day and can therefore promote well-being and performance. With Color Transition Control, a schedule for light colour changes is executed. This makes it possible to create lighting scenes based on the time of day.
  • Compatibility and safety: Certified in accordance with IEC 62386 Ed. 2 as a DALI-2 control device with KNX Data Secure technology
  • Lamp-protecting functions: Separate switch-on and switch-off delays and soft on/soft off function for a longer service life of the lights
Application areas

How and where can I use the KNX DALI Gateways?

The KNX DALI Gateways are suitable for a wide range of applications, from industrial buildings such as production halls to commercial properties such as office buildings and hotels to private smart homes. KNX DALI Gateways also provide helpful services in public facilities such as schools, hospitals or administrative buildings.

One of the gateways' strengths is Human Centric Lighting (HCL or biodynamic lighting control). This refers to the dynamic adaptation of lighting to the natural course of daylight. Light colour and brightness are based on natural daylight, which can help to increase well-being and productivity.

How can I configure the KNX DALI Gateways?

The Elsner KNX DALI Gateways can be configured and commissioned quickly and easily. You can configure the gateways using the ETS software. Download the associated DCA (Device Configuration App) there, which supplements the standard parameter catalogue. Identifying, addressing and assigning DALI operating devices is therefore possible in the familiar ETS environment. You do not need any additional software beyond the ETS. The seamless connection of the systems ensures smooth integration.
