Smart living in the detached house

Smart applications with KNX

In our world, automation and networking are key components for a comfortable, secure and energy-efficient home. With KNX products, a detached house can now be equipped with impressive functions that take everyday life to a new level.

For example, lighting, heating, blinds and more can be controlled at the touch of a finger. KNX makes it possible to adapt living spaces to individual needs and optimise energy consumption in the process.

Security is the top priority: Monitor your home in real time and stay in control, no matter where you are.

Discover a new dimension of living – smart living in a detached house with KNX. On this page, we have summarised some key aspects of building automation with the help of KNX for you.

Let there be light!

Intelligent lighting control

In rooms where daylight varies greatly, dynamic lighting control with KNX, for example, offers enormous advantages. On sunny days, the lighting automatically adapts to the incident daylight. This means that the artificial lighting is dimmed or switched off to save energy.

Human Centric Lighting is a lighting control system that adjusts the white tone of the light throughout the day. The light tends to be cooler in the morning and during the day to increase activity and warmer in the evening to have a calming effect. In this way, the natural biorhythm can be supported. So when you come into the bathroom in the morning, the light has a daylight tone that helps you wake up. In the evening before going to bed, the light is dimmed and warm white to confirm to the body that it is time to go to sleep. This is where intelligent technology shows its strength!

In rooms where the brightness is constant and the presence of people can vary, presence detection with KNX is extremely effective. If nobody is in the room and there is sufficient daylight, the lighting switches off automatically to save energy. This reduces waste and lowers energy consumption.

In storerooms and basements, the light is often only switched on and off, which is cost-effective as no additional sensors are required. But even here you can save energy by using a switch-off delay so that the light switches off automatically. Every area of your home can benefit from intelligent lighting!

Intelligent daylight control with KNX not only allows you to increase comfort in your home, but also significantly reduce energy consumption, resulting in long-term cost savings.

Practical example

Constant light control with Sewi KNX

Constant light control is integrated into the Sewi-L devices. This sensor system measures the current brightness and uses the dimming function to add just enough artificial light to keep the desired target room brightness constant. The lighting is therefore only used as much as necessary.

Intelligent heating control

The right room temperature plays a major role in feeling comfortable at home. The ideal temperature varies depending on the room - office, bedroom, living room or fitness room. This is where the intelligent heating control system comes into play, using PI control to regulate the room temperature precisely and in line with the type of heating (e.g. convector or underfloor heating).

But that's not all! This technology not only offers convenience, but also opportunities to save on heating costs. By integrating window contacts, you can automatically lower the heating to frost protection mode when the window is open.  This increases energy efficiency and environmental friendliness in equal measure. You can also use the intelligent heating control system to implement customised schedules and adapt the room climate to your personal requirements.

And it gets even smarter! If you use presence detectors, you can also use them to control the heating. The heating automatically switches to comfort when you are present and to standby when you are absent. Particularly useful in rooms such as classrooms and offices to save energy and increase comfort.

Heating control in practice with Cala KNX

The Cala KNX room controller provides important services for the implementation of intelligent heating control. The KNX push-button compares the setpoint and actual temperature and calculates the actuating value, which is sent to the heating actuator as a percentage to control the actuator or valve.

Cala KNX also enables the integration of window contacts to intelligently lower the heating when the windows are open.

Alarm functions via the KNX system

Security for the smart home

The KNX bus enables a wide range of information to be recorded. Particularly relevant data such as smoke alarms, motion alarms or water alarms are used to warn the occupants of the house in good time and prevent major damage.

For notifications outside the house, an alarm message can be forwarded to other systems via the KNX bus. This ensures a rapid response in the event of an alarm.

A concrete application example is the use of our leakage sensor, which quickly detects leaks in washing machines or dishwashers. This alarm message is forwarded to the CasaConnect KNX building control centre via the KNX bus. The CasaConnect control unit then sends the alarm message by e-mail to the stored user, allowing them to respond directly.

In addition, this alarm function can be combined with motion detectors to detect movements in the building during absence and receive corresponding notifications.

Furthermore, the alarm message from a triggered smoke detector, for example, can transmit an alarm message to the Casa Connect KNX building control centre to ensure security in your home.

Made easy with KNX

Intelligent building automation for energy efficiency and environmental friendliness

KNX solutions not only make your home more energy-efficient, but also more intelligent and environmentally friendly. How does that work?

  1. With KNX heating control: precise room temperature control and individual adjustments enable more efficient use of the heating system. The result: energy savings and lower heating costs.
  2. With lighting automation via KNX: The lighting in the interior is intelligently adapted to daylight conditions and presence, which minimises energy consumption. This protects the environment and reduces your electricity bill.
  3. With window control via KNX: Demand-led control of the ventilation windows ensures efficient air quality. This not only creates a pleasant indoor climate, but also saves energy.

Practical examples of energy efficiency and environmental friendliness

Who wouldn't want a house that is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly? We have two practical examples for you:

  • A KNX B4 binary input helps the KNX system to monitor the window contacts in the living room. When the window is open, the actuator forwards this information to the KNX system, which automatically switches to eco mode, lowers the room temperature and thus saves energy. Closed windows activate comfort mode and keep the room cosy and warm.
  • The CasaConnect KNX building control centre offers another great function in combination with the Elsner weather sensor system – ‘night-time re-cooling’. Open the windows automatically at night to temper the rooms with the natural coolness of the night, without air conditioning. This saves energy without compromising on comfort.

Smart Gardening

Turning the garden into an automated green oasis

In the field of automated irrigation in intelligent single-family homes, there are now exciting optimisation possibilities, especially for KNX users. These irrigation systems are designed to make water consumption efficient while promoting the health of your plants.

Through automation and scheduling, water is only used when your plants really need it, avoiding both water evaporation and over-watering. In addition, some systems adapt their irrigation to local weather conditions and the soil to ensure an optimal supply.

In addition, advanced irrigation systems even take into account the individual requirements of different plant species and utilise rainwater to make irrigation even more sustainable.

KNX practical example

Automated garden irrigation with Jardana and tank sensor

The Jardana irrigation controller waters the garden automatically. In conjunction with built-in soil moisture sensors, the system recognises the moisture in the soil and automatically adjusts the watering. Jardana is suitable for all types of irrigation, can be controlled via app and can supply up to 4 irrigation zones with water. As it can autonomously create a Wi-Fi network, it is also ideal for remote locations such as allotment gardens – provided there is a power connection. Practical: Jardana can be used with or without KNX.

If you have a cistern in your garden, a KNX tank probe such as the KNX SO250 may make sense for you. The probe can be placed in a cistern and displays the current fill level. If there is enough water in the cistern, the garden can be watered with rainwater and valuable drinking water can be saved.
